June News Update
ALISTER JOHNSON / INVITATION.. OUT JUNE 22ND!
Wah Wah 45s are very proud to present our very first release from Canadian producer and multi-instrumentalist Alister Johnson.
You probably recognize Alisters name from his work on John Kongs Do Right! label, most recently with the single Like A Star, as well as remixes for fellow Canadians Robert Strauss, Voice, Elizabeth Shepherd and LAL.
Alister also doubles up as DJ Catalist, having produced the killer booties Dont Know and Baltimore for PR Records.
On Invitation he takes a much loved, classic jazz cut, and, with the help of another Canadian, Sacha Williamson, on vocal duties, delivers a truly unique interpretation. Invitation is a sultry piece of soul/jazz that, thanks to Alister having one eye on the dance floor with his production, should work in the clubs too!
Think Mr. Scruff meets Nicola Conte and you get the idea!!

Radio play from Kev Beadle on Solar Radio, Trevor Parkee (Departure Lounge, Australia) & Phil Levene (Eclectic Jazz.com).
PART TIME HEROES / THE REMIXES 12. OUT JUNE 29TH!
The Part Time Heroes sound has often been compared to scene defining stalwarts like Koop, Zero 7 and Portishead, with a uniquely refreshingly, wholesome and honest style, complete with live instrumentation, deep jazz roots, folky flourishes and organic, soul nourishing goodness.
Following on from the digital release of their Remixes album project in May, we have unleashed two of the finest and most popular reinterpretations on strictly limited 12 inch vinyl!! Bristol kings of stoned soul, Unforscene, deliver an ethereal dance floor rework of Angels Fly (featuring the spine tingling vocals of Jono McCleery) that comes in at just under an epic 8 minutes. On the flip, we give you a drum & bass monster from one half of the PTH duo (Ross Wakefield) showing us his dark side with a stunning junglist re-work of the usually sultry Stop, Fade, Blur, featuring Laura Vane on vocals. Defikews Stop, Fade, Roll Remix is a tops off, arms in the air, sweat inducing ravers anthem!!
And not only that, we are also releasing the much sought after Nextmen Remix of Stop, Fade, Blur on the same day on strictly digital download only!! Dont sleep!!
Radio play of the Nextmen remix from Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts) & the Unforscene remix from Kev Beadle (Solar Radio) & Dirk Rumpff (Offtrack Radio) with DJ support from Diesler!
SCRIMSHIRE / ALONG CAME THE DEVIL ONE NIGHT. OUT NOW!
You would have thought that Rugby was famous for little more than, er, rugby, but no longer!! Egg chasing takes a back seat as Rugby born Adam Scrimshire unveils his debut album on Wah Wah 45s, and what a cracker it is!!
Its been a long journey for this young singer, songwriter, producer and multi instrumentalist ever since his nan introduced him to an Errol Garner record at the tender age of 14.
Scrimshires sound is steeped in jazz, soul, funk and a little folk, but with a nod to contemporary sounds, and a strong crossover pop edge. Be in no doubt; this boy knows how to write a tune.
Following on from the club orientated singles You Will Save Me and Warm Sound (remixed by Spiritual South and Aaron Jerome respectively), Scrimshire released his third single, Certainly (featuring Norwegian chanteuse Inga Lill Aker) earlier this year to rave reviews, and now brings you his first full length album, already getting attention from Gilles Peterson and Nick Luscombe.
Its a sometimes melancholic, sometimes uplifting piece, with a very English feel. We think its safe to say this album couldnt have been made anywhere else!! Check the pastoral All Roads Lead You Home and folky title track for evidence of this. Elsewhere, the aforementioned Miss Aker adds soul on Warm Sound, Claire Laurent supplies the jazz on Springtime, and Rob Hynd the rasping vocals on The Low Road and Mistaken, while Wah Wah 45s Stac cameos on the quite exquisite I Have Come To You.
Many thanks to the many people who attended the Scrimshire album launch. It was absolutely massive!!

REACTIONS!!
Wicked! I like that a lot. Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1)
Had a nice one hour walk thru the forest and was listening to Scrimshires album. Warm Sound = goose bumps. Springtime = so beautiful. Eddy Ramich (Compost)
Seriously good songs and sonics and arrangements. No one could tell these apart from The Cinematic Orchestra, and the strings are ammmmazing!! Aaron Jerome (BBE)
Scrimshires album just gets better and better with every play and it had already blown me away on the first few plays. Defo one of the lps of 2009!! Simon Harrison (Basic Soul)
Stunning. Really enjoyed this last hour with it on today. Wonderful stuff. You've gotta be proud of such a lovely piece of work. Simon S (Futuristica)
Some kind of world/folk music (people we spoke to), that is to say there are some elements in there. Some tracks sound like poppy soul tunes (warm sound) in a positive way. Top track is the singer/songwriter tune I have come to you. Seems like it will be a very diverse open minded longplayer. lots of organic elements. music with big potencies. Really looking forward to the album. Matthis Desch (Bogaloo, Germany)
The Scrimshire is a classic superb album, with ace production! Eivind Olsvik (Hifi Terapi, Norway)
Love it. Im really digging that acoustic breaks type vibe at the moment. Sounds like a Tim Bidwell production to me? Very similar strings. My favourite since the Hardkandy LP I reckon. DJ Griff (Jelly Jazz)
Enjoying this selection, a very mature sound, melodic and thoughtful arrangements. Played All Roads lead You Home, People We Spoke To, Along Came The Devil One Night . Other tracks will get an airing. Phil Levene (Eclectic Jazz)

It could easily be one of the best debut albums of 2009. This is the kind of album you love from the very beginning, that you can recommend to your friends, even if they usually listen to other kinds of music. Santiago Tadeo Cervera (www.acidjazzhispano.com, Spain)
This is OUTSTANDING. 9/10 Mike Stukes (Mystic Vybes WHCR 90.3 FM, NYC)

PART TIME HEROES / MEANWHILE. THE REMIXES. OUT NOW!
Sometime in the early 21st century a mild mannered part time shop assistant and unassuming sandwich delivery boy were hatching a plan to rescue quality soulful music from almost certain oblivion.
Ross Wakefield and Toby Vane (as they’re known to the taxman) harnessed their shared influences, ranging from Public Enemy and Joe Cocker to Elbow and Nick Drake, and began to create their own unique supersonic sound. They invited selected friends and musicians to bring more of a live element to their recordings, including newcomers Jono McCleery (Music Weeks ‘Best Unsigned Act of 2005’), Lucy Kitchen, Bridgette Amofah (Oi Va Voi), Pete Simpson (Elektrons), BBC Jazz award winner and Ronnie Scotts fave Liane Carroll (London Elektricity) and Laura Vane (MJ Cole, Hardkandy).
2008 saw the duo release their debut album, Meanwhile, earning them global critical acclaim, and radio rotation from Zane Lowe, Mr Scruff, Ras Kwame, and Benji B, amongst others. Indeed, Gilles Peterson became the duos number one champion, inviting them to record a live session at Maida Vale Studios.
The Part Time Heroes sound has often been compared to scene defining stalwarts like Koop, Zero 7 and Portishead, and Meanwhile.. continued that legacy, pushing forward with a uniquely refreshingly, wholesome and honest style, complete with live instrumentation, deep jazz roots, folky flourishes and organic, soul nourishing goodness.
So it was then time to take it to the next level. The Heroes pulled more favours, twisted more arms, and enlisted a selection of the music scene’s finest producers to give their own interpretation of the Heroes music.
Southampton beat juggler Featurecast gives ‘Method’ his own b-boy bounce; Bristols finest, Unforscene, get deep and epic with Angels Fly; Boom Clap Bachelors and our very own Scrimshire both re-work the beautiful Sun Will Shine; and on the dance floor tip, Composts Marbert Rocel and UK production don Landslide turn In My Soul and Realise respectively into a pair of big club bangers! And as if that wasn’t enough, the Heroes themselves deliver cracking remixes of Ready For Change, Shadowlands and a monstrous drum & bass version of Stop, Fade, Blur!!!!
Part Time Heroes will be launching their remix project at The Jazz Café on Friday June 26th

UNDERGROUND HITS & EXCLUSIVE BITS 4 : WE WAH TEN! / OUT NOW!
Blimey, a decade of Wah Wah wax eh?!
Since starting out slowly with the Espen Horne single, (the now classic) Magnetica in 99, it has been a long, exciting journey. Ten years later, we have released nearly fifty singles and almost a dozen albums; we have seen vinyl come, nearly go then come on strong again; we have moved into the digital realm with much excitement; and have seen our club nights grow from The Jazz Café, Cargo, Vibe Bar and now to our 10th Birthday Session at The Scala in October!! More details on that below.
On this compilation, a celebration of all that's fresh out of the Wah Wah camp in 2009, we have got soul/jazz treats from Scrimshire, Ashley Thomas and Stac; twisted electronica and dope beats from Unforscene (remixing Part-Time Heroes), Red Astaire on the remix for Kendra Lou & The Miracles, and cutting edge Norwegian producer King Knut. Elsewhere there is stunning music out of Canada from Alister Johnson, Scrimshire on the bossa tip for his mix of PTH, dance floor funk from Jamie Finlay and Lack Of Afro (remixing Middlewood Sessions), brand new Colman Brothers latin jazz heat, and a killer jungle workout of Step Forward courtesy of the mysterious Chief!!
Look out for the birthday party at The Scala in London on October 30th - Its going to be a proper cracker! In the meantime, enjoy the comp, and here's to the next ten years!!
