Chris Cracknell (1BTN Radio) Jukebox Listen

In no particular order.

This could have easily been a weak effort, sounding dated, harking back to the ‘Golden Age’ but no. This sounds as fresh and relevant, jammed with guest vocals, beats dripping with style and Q-Tip and the crew on point. Essential hip hop for 2017.

Ive said it on my radio show, but I am in love with Ms. De Biasio. Her vocals are flawless, besting all but the greats, of which I am sure she will take her seat by in time. The production sits exactly how it needs to, brooding, sparse with perfect musicianship. After Blackened Cities I wondered where she could go, but she has used that as a template for this album, some songs deconstructed versions of that larger piece. This is a must have and will go down as a classic.

This album has some pretty heavy and in demand musicians in tow, but it doesn’t suffer from being heavy or bloated. Its also been somewhat of a slow burner, I’ve been playing tracks on my radio show and slowly falling in love with each track in turn. This is truly a brilliant album, which, I hope, gets the praise it rightly deserves.

A real slow burner for me, immediate tracks like "Gardenia Devil" grab you from the start, others take a little longer and require closer listening, but this has to be the standout reissue for 2017. A great album bought back to the world, with a glorious full colour booklet, a joy to behold.

A cracking solo album from the multi instrumentalist, belying his years with great songs and production. Some real gravitas in this, which is what I am looking for in solo male albums. Last year was James Blake, this year was Jordan Rakei.

Stop. As Jean-Claude would say “you Need This!”. And you do, this is absolutely essential from Kamasi. Side A features 6 tracks, on their own is enough for any release, but side B combines all six tracks to create a massive, swirling piece which blows my mind. Kamasi Washington, and, in turn, the West Coast Get Down, are leading the current charge in Jazz and it is easy to see why they are packing out venues and festivals with music like this. We are blessed to have this music among us.

A great compilation filled with killer cuts from the stable that was Black Saint and Soul Note. This is a joy to share, because it isn’t too heavy or exclusive, I can play any of these tracks on my show, knowing I am bringing the listeners with me, not making them work too hard. I am familiar with a couple of the tracks, but joy in hearing new tracks, I probably wouldn’t get to on my own. Compilation of the year for sure.

This isn’t quite like anything else anyone is making at the moment, which makes is really interesting. A kind of (for want of a better description) trip hop/jazz crossover, and happy to hear some turntablism at work.

It really is a pleasure to listen to, uplifting yet not too much. Max is a master of the traditional instrument of Martinique and this album really brings it alive. I have been playing tracks off this nearly every week on my show, it perfectly compliments some heavier tracks with some sunshine, of which there is not enough of!
